My dad insists that being a doctor or lawyer will give me an easier life than being

a journalist.? What are some FACTS (or plain, unspoken truths) that will disprove his belief? He opposes me becoming a journalist and tells me that I will be looked down upon in the journalism realm due to my being a minority (Asian), whereas discrimination will not come into play if I be a doctor or lawyer. He also claims that being a doctor/lawyer is easier than being a journalist who 'runs around 365 days a year.' Well, don't doctors work for many hours at a time without rest? Doesn't the world of medical and law get engulfed into corruption as well?

So how on earth can I dissuade his belief that being a doctor or lawyer is easier than being a journalist?

If possible, PLEASE provide references and sources.

I think your dad is obsessed with status and is trying to persuade you into those careers. Because these are high status fields, he wants to be proud and also doesn't want you to struggle in life. This is understandable but that doesn't mean that these two jobs is stress free.

I'm Asian and my sister is a doctor. She works long hours and she's always on call. She has to pay a lot of insurance because of lawsuits. My dad says that being a doctor is a hard life. He's realizing that it's not a rosey life anymore.

My friend is a lawyer. We didn't start making real money until he was a partner in a law firm. He works at least 70 hours a week. He has to do this much in order to get a head and to bill the client. He has to earn every cent of it. In court he has to win which can be very stressful. Since he's suing everyone to get money. He's also been sued himself which can be very stressful.

Do both of these people get paid over 6 figures? Yes. Do they have an easy work life? No. They also both have to have continueing education.

There is discrimination in every profession and every walk of life. Your life will be easier if you are happy and love what you do. If you are a doctor or lawyer, you might make more money, but be unhappy and the rest of your personal life will be affected by this.

Your father, though should be respected, has no clue what will be right for you. Listen to his advice and then counter with your argument on why you would rather be a Journalist. Let him know that money is not your motivator. He should listen and agree if he wants you to be happy.
