My dad drives an automatic transmission car, and he often switches from

"drive" to one of the lower gears while driving in order to "use the engine to slow the car." For example, if there is a red light at the bottom of the hill, he will switch to "3" or whatever it's called, varies from car to car I'm sure. I've done it a couple of times, but I'm wondering if this will hurt the transmission in the long run.
