My compy was infiltrated by malware. Can't run Chrome or Safari, only Firefox. Why?

I have reason to believe I have purged my disk of all malware, but perhaps I am mistaken... for when I try to run Chrome, I get this...

"This webpage is not available.

The webpage at http://www.google.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address."

Any ideas? Thanks!
