My computer makes a weird cricketing sound?

I have a hp Elitebook Tablet. When it is on, it usually makes a weird cricketing sound. The sound is on and off, it stops, does it again, and then stops again. I turn my computer off and then on again to try and stop the noise, but lately that hasn't been working as much. We all have these computers for school and my advisor told us that if your computer is making a cricketing sound, do a hard turn off (switch the off switch instead of going to windows and pressing the shut down button on the screen). He said this because some kids computers have been doing this and their computers shut down and their hard drive crashed. Is that true that your hard drive will crash?

The noise you're hearing is probably the hard drive. Usually, that noise tells you
"Hey, guy, I'm dying, get your files off me, and replace me."
It's bound to happen most of the time.

EDIT TO ADD:
I had a 250 GB external drive, that at random times made a high-pitched squeak. At that time, it would un-mount from the OS, and wouldn't read. So, I pulled my files off after a while. Needless to say, it died after some time, no longer mounting and such.
