My computer is running awful. Is my hard drive possibly dying?

I have an HP Pavilion 512x hard drive w/intel processor for Windows XP 2002. I have a super VGA monitor. Per another tekkie's advice from CNET blog, last night I completely removed Internet Explorer as my main browser & am now using Firefox 3.6 as my only & primary browser. I keep my Yahoo email page open, my F/B page open, & an MS Word doc or 2 open at the bottom, a Google blank search page open but minimized as tabs on bottom of my screen w/only 1 of them maximized at a time. So I never have dozens of things all open & maximized simultaneously.

I use AT&T as my internet cable DSL provider.

I just ran my (free) BitDefender 2009 antivirus software program & did a deep system scan/clean. I just installed all updates/upgrades. I've rebooted 3 times in past 2 hours. I just backed up my Seagate stand-alone hard drive.

Despite all the above, my computer is slow as molasses doing ANYTHING & EVERYTHING or even worse just won't do what I want it to at all. It keeps kicking me off F/B, Yahoo Mail, & other sites. I'm getting constant unresponsive script error messages. Extra apps/features in F/B & other sites won't execute even tho they're safe to use/apply.

Does this mean I need new tower? If not, what else could it mean? I'm SO frustrated & have so much urgent/important work (not play) to do on my computer especially right now of all times. Unemployed (but job hunting which is why I so badly need my computer to work well right now), so can't afford to pay IT person to repair. Thanks for any advice/suggestions!
