My computer fan comes on way more often than it used to.?

My son plays computer games on it (World of Warcraft) and it come on often when he plays it which I understand BC there is a lot of activity going on. But now it come on every few mins. even when it is idle. It's on now and I can hear the hard drive processing. I only have my email program running and typing this. Is this normal?
