My chevelle won't start something is wrong with the battery connection to the car?

its a brand new battery it is not the starter because when i try to start it the lights wont turn on or anything any idea? my guess is the wirering is messed up but about a week ago it was driving and i broke down in the middle of the road and i opened the hood and saw smoke coming from the battery and the was a hole in the bottom of the battery and acid was coming out little by little the hole was created by a wire that i left under the battery since then i've replaced the battery and figured i was good to go but now it wont start. HELP ME!!!
