My Chestnut Gelding has black and white hairs throughout his mane and coat? is he...

...really chestnut? he's only 9 so he's not getting white hair with age, and his mane and tail are almost more black hair than they are red! his coat is still a uniform intensive red, not dark or light points. is he some kind of sorrel or roan? or am i right in him being a chestnut?

pleaase help! xxx
i would post pics, but i don't have any close enough to his coat to see them, i'll get some tuesday asap!
