My cellphone got shut off,can I just switch?

My cellphone got shut off awhile ago and I haven't paid the bill or whatever.Can I get a phone with another cellphone company without having to pay for my previous bills with the other company>?
 
If you havent paid the bill then your cellphone provider may have reported it and you may now have bad credit. This means when you go to apply for another phone, they will see you have a default and probably wont give it to you. Sometimes companies take a while before they default you as they want to get the money out of you, so you may not have bad credit yet.

Im not sure where you are, but here in Australia we have PrePaid (Pay as you go), where you dont need to have a credit check to get a number. You have to buy the phone, and you pay for your talk time upfront, when you run out your phone stops until you buy more (usually once a month). This may be the best option for you.
