PLEASE HELP!!! 
? ok so i was driving from my house to a friends (less than 10 miles away) and my car was running perfectly fine. i have a little more than a 1/4 tank of gas so i know it didnt turn off cuz i ran outta gas. but other than this is what happened: i was on a main road about to turn onto the apartment complex entrance. i was in a turning lane and i was about to pull and turn into the apartments. my brake and gas pedals felt really hard to push and then my steering wheel would barely move. i immediately stopped trying to turn because i would have been hit. i then sat in the middle of the road and called my friend to come get me. i also noticed that the oil and battery lights came on in my car. (they were not on previously) this is where i cant really remember what happened. i think either my car died or i turned it off because i didnt want it to keep running once i saw those lights come on. my friend put my car in nuetral and pushed it to his car and tryed to jump it thinking maybe it was the battery. well it wouldnt even start with the jumper cables.
does anyone have any clue to what could have happened and if so how would i go about fixing it and what is the price range possibly?
im a young girl and dont know much about cars.

i checked the timing belt. it isnt cracked or broken at all.
what is the altenator and how much is that average?
