My car sputters and almost quits when I step hard on the gas pedal, what

could be causing this? 1992 Buick? 1992 Buick Park Avenue fully loaded. When I try to speed up fast to pass etc. and step hard on the gas pedal, I hear a pop sputtering sound and the car hesitates and almost stops, but then it catches and works ok. Any ideas as to what may be causing this problem and any suggestions on how to fix the problem? Thanks
