my car is starting to sound like a diesel tractor?

About 2 days ago the engine started to make a funny diesel-like noise when idling and accelerating. I checked the oil... seems to be ok, maybe a bit low. I'm not really car smart so I'm not sure what it would be. It's starting to get a little louder now so I would like to try to diagnose the problem without having to take it in. 2005 equinox
