...Any ideas on what's wrong?!? I need some serious suggestions as to what is wrong with our 2000 olds intrigue (has 134,000 miles).. earlier this summer we took our first trip of the year, on the way home it was close to 100 outside and we turned the AC on for the first time this year.. after about 20 miles w/ it on, the car seriously started overheating.. we managed to limp to the nearest town, turned the car off, went into a store and got some coolant and put it in the car.. When we opened the cap it started to "boil over" and was seriously hot. It appeared to be boiling. We didn't think there was anything wrong really, just thought the ppl who changed our oil before we went outta town just forgot to refill the coolant and managed to limp home.
Since then we have tried the AC a few more times, but it overheats any time we turn it on. So, we've been getting by w/o it.
Then we took a trip across state, used vents and rolled down windows and it seemed fine. All of the days we went on our trip were cool, except for the day home. We got 3/4 the way back and we stopped for gas. When we stopped I noticed the car was hissing pretty bad. It smelt "hot" like something was burning. It would hiss if we were moving or idle. But when we turned the car off the hissing stopped immediately. Once again we managed to limp home. This day was also pretty hot, about 90. We figured it was just overheated from going so far, but the temp gauge in the car was not showing that we were overheated.. it showed just a tick above half way between hot and cold.
It also has developed a problem where the temperature starts rising at around 3500 RPMs w/ or w/o the AC on. We have not experienced problems with the heater (yet) since this problem only started this summer.
Does the hissing have anything to do w/ the AC problem?
I appear to be having opposite problems compared with everyone else.. my overheating problems are when we speed up not slow or brake. We don't overheat at stop signs or anything. Actually when we're in town driving at a normal town speed we're fine.. when we get on the road the temp ALWAYS climbs.
There are no puddles under the car. And a mechanic friend said it's not the thermostat. What else could it be?
