My cable box (digital) is hooked up to my VCR-I can play VCRs but can't

record from TV-why? I recently upgraded to digital from regular cable. I could record to my vcr before this upgrade. Now when I turn the tv channel to 3, which is what's behind the vcr, a blue screen comes up-when I change channels, each new channel shows on the tv screen, but still the blue screen each time. what am i doing wrong.
