hi everyone, im a 23 yr old in the military with a BP of 142 over 103. my doctor is doing a poor job of explaining what this means other then "its not healthy!". this is what i hear everytime and no one will explain it. hopefully you guys will be able to help out a little more. a little about me to explain the BP is i am 23 male, 6'2 265lbs. please any info anyone to what this means and how to fix it. thanks

one of the very first things that really just does need to be done here is to try and find the underlying reason for it. in someone your age, its just very unusual to actually be dealing with high BPs on any consistant basis. there are many different things that they can actually test here to at least see if there IS a real underlying cause. one biggie here that you can have that you don't even know about yet, is some level of actual underlying type of a kidney disease. this can easliy be ruled out or in using a few of things. getting your kidney labs(blood labs) done is one, but it only gives part of the overall picture with some types of actual disease processes that can impact kidneys(most actual kidney functions simply do NOT change til very real damage creates function problems, that is what the labs check, functions). obtaining the standard UA too just to check for ANY real traces of protien in the urine since trace protien found in ones urine usually is one of the very first ealy indicators of underlying kidney disease, is two. the third thing, and this is just to actually even 'see' what the kidneys 'look like' at all would be to just have an abdominal ultrasound. using all that would realistically give you one of the very best pictures of whether or not this just could be from some form of a kidney diesease. do you know if there is ANY family history of someone actually having a form of kidney problems? is there any real solid cardiac issues there either?

another possibility just could be within the heart since there just is a very real connection between heart function and BPs too? and they CAN also do testing for that as well. i just know more about the kidneys since i have a kidney and liver disease myself that i was actually born with. i had absolutely no real clue til my son got deathly sick with liver failure that stemmed from a mutated form of my kidney disease. i was 40 years old before i ever even had a freaking clue i had had this all my life even? but the one thing that i DID show tho many years BEFORE my son even got sick was trace protien in my urine that was from my FD physical being done? no one ever mentioned anything to me back then just what the protien actually ment so i kind of blew it off? but that most certainly WAS the first indicator of it since my actual blood labs are still even now ten years after finding all this out within ALL normal ranges. but my ultrasounds really look like hell right now with huge huge globs of cysts everywhere within both kidneys and my liver too. but still great labs? that is only because there has not been any real affectation of my kidney 'functions' yet, but that WILL change here probably much sooner than later.

but for some who have this same inherited kidney disease called polycystic kidney disease, their BPs are also pretty elevated sooner vs later? my BPs are okay only because i also have a spinal cord injury that actually in this instance becasue it damaged my sympathetic nervous system, i now have pretty low hypotension vs the more hyper that i 'should' have by now?

i would seriously go back to that doc or another if this one is an idiot and ask him to please do some testing of anything that could be underlying that just 'can' create high BPs. but those kidneys and then heart really do need some more in depth testing at this point, among other possibles. even just obtaining that one single UA would more than likely, only because you DO have the high BP issue already, any real possible trace protien if it is there. this really IS one of the best tests for catching any real kidney disease earlier than with plain old blood labs could. once you can hopefully find that cause at least you will have a real reason there that in some cases can be treated depending upon just what that real cause is. but DO go back to a doc here for some questions and the testing. this high BP stuff just is something that should be treated itself too if yours are that high on a very consistant type basis, since untreated hypertension can also DAMAGE the kidneys too if it is actually being caused by say, a heart issue? unfortuently that is how the kidneys just are. it kind of goes both ways there. hopefully they can get this all figured out for you sooner vs later. but DO follow up. good luck to you with this. please do keep me posted as to anything you actually find out, K? The general guideline is that 140 over 100 is the beginning of high blood pressure. This is more significant because you are so young. Doctors can be terrible about explaining things. I am guessing maybe he is thinking everybody ought to know about high blood pressure by now. But you could do a search to find the consequences. In a nutshell, there are various consequences most coming about after a number of years of untreated high blood pressure - like increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

The other poster brings up cause. Is anything being done about on that front? Or possible treatments (whether lifestyle or medication)?

well they put me on a medication to see if it help so we'll see when i go back in 2 days. and other things are changing my work out towards more cardio
