My boyfriend violated his probation what else can he do instead of jail?

My boyfriend had felony probation for Grand theft of money or property, its for 3yrs and I'm only one year in to it. He violated his probation The new charge is for felony possession of narcotics, Which is for 3years.Is there a chance he can do something other then jail time?
