*spoilers -- obviously*
So I'm almost done with the game and basically I have a few complaints about the game so far.
Before I start I will say a couple of things
A. I have not used any guides at all. So its not like it was easy for me because of that.
B. I have played most of the other zelda games so I am basing this off of them (mainly OOT)
C. I am not QUITE finished so my analysis of the end game items could be a bit off.
1. Boss battles - way, WAY too easy. I have never been "stuck" on a boss and on top of that I often find myself gaining health through the duration of the fight due to the large availability of hearts from trash mobs... way too easy.
2. Dungeon Mobs - once again way too easy, often times you can just run right past them, in addition it is way too easy to keep your health full at all times. I remember in OOT I was constantly strapped to make sure my bottles were full most of the time (granted I was like 10 years old at the time, but still it was much much harder). In TP there are pots everywhere that give you health, pots which can be respawned by simply entering / leaving rooms.
3. Items / Puzzle usage - here is most of my beef with the game.... here is the basic flow --- enter dungeon, traverse puzzle or two, kill 1st boss get new item, use item for rest of dungeon, traverse puzzles all dealing with new item, kill boss by using new item, clear dungeon .. abandon item (except the clawshot -- you use that thing forever). Yea i know this is how most zelda games work, but i was hoping for something different.
4. Badass quest reward items - yea thats right... think about the big goron's sword in OOT -- yea it was a HUGE quest to get it, but that big ass 2 hander was so much fun to play with... additionally in TP (as far as I know at least) you can *buy* the best armor / shield in the game.... thats right BUY as in with rupees... I mean seriously its not even difficult to obtain the best armor and shield in the game. In OOT it was a huge accomplishment. Oh and what the hell no mirror shield?? The best shield in the game is bought for a mere 100 rupees from a baby. I see no reason why they would regress in the armor category.
5. Long Side quest chains - as much as it sucked having to go through the huge quests to get Epona / the big goron sword in OOT -- it gave you a sense of accomplishment. OOT also had collection items such as the heart pieces and skulltullas (sp?) whch I guess could be compared to agitha's bugs, but still there were no long chains with a substantial reward in TP.
6. The abandoning of the "mana bar" - I'm not really sure that it was called a mana bar in OOT, but I am sure most of you know what i am talking about. This bar added a lot to the difficulty / fun in the game by allowing items to be elaborated on. For instance -- in OOT you had 3 types of special arrows: fire, ice, light -- all of which required your mana to use. In TP you can only use bomb arrows. In addition the fact that you were constantly trying to make sure your gauge was full made it much harder to fight a room full of mobs.
What they did right:
1. The wand / temple of light - this dungeon / dungeon premise could be one of the most fun I've played in any game -- ever.
2. Warps - they got rid of most if not all of the walking time in the game which is very nice.
3. Mini games - they seemingly added a lot more than were in OOT / other zelda games.
4. The Ball and Chain - Great new item, I had a lot of fun playing with it and found it pretty useful out side of the dungeon
5. The Gale boomerang - adding the wind factor to this weapon made it straight up badass. It went from being a basic crappy weapon to having awesome puzzle solving uses.
6. Horse combat - in OOT you were able to shoot your bow and arrow at what.. targets while on a horse? here in this game they took mounted combat to a whole new level.
Debatable (not sure if i like / hate)
1. New use of Epona - yea its nice that you don't need her all of the time, but it sucks that you have to find a damn plant to get her.
2. The wolf mode - was really fun at first, but became very old very fast collecting the damn tears. Lack of new moves for the wolf or any sort of new item made game play for him be very repetitive. At the same time it was nice to get a break from human form all of the time.
