My Akita is aggressive towards other dogs?

My Akita is aggressive towards other dogs when i take her for a walk. She is 10 months old and is good and obedient when in the house. But when i take her to the park, she gets aggressive towards other dogs and especially dogs that are smaller than her. With big dogs she often gets on well with them and will happily around the park with larger dogs such as Labradors. She only started getting aggressive a few months ago. When she was still a small puppy it wasn't a problem so I think it's probably a dominance thing rather than a fear-based aggression.

I know that Akitas are a dominant breed and people seem to be giving two different pieces of advice:
1. Akitas are aggressive in nature therefore never let her off the leash.
2. You can train an Akita to rid them of their natural aggressiveness/ prey drive.

How should I train her? If you've owned an Akita did you have the same problem/how did you solve it?

You need help before another dog gets hurt or worse. You need to find a really good dog behaviorist and have them work with you individually. Classes at PetCo or PetSmart aren't going to help. You also might want to read about Cesar Millan's ideas. He addresses aggression a lot.

But do call a dog behaviorist who comes to your home and will work with you and your dog in your own environments - your particular dog park and neighborhood.

As far as training off leash or not, it is not only an issue of he breed, but the individual dog. That's what a dog behaviorist can help you with. But think being off leash is less important than knowing you can walk your dog on a leash with no issues.

Good luck.
