My 86 Ford Ranger's transmission is slipping a bit..would it help to change the fluid

and filter? A mechanic friend of mine told me it WOULDN'T be a good idea to change the tranny fluid and filter as old as the truck was. He said that it messes transmissions up when they get this old.
I'm wondering if there is any validity to his argument.
