My 8 week old lab puppy cries and howls when we go in the car?

we are planning a 4 hour trip next weekend, but he gets really upset now when we travel for only 10 minutes.He howls,cries but doesn't bark, just seems to be really frightened. Is it to soon? any tips? should we leave it until he is older? we have only had him a week now, help and honest advice is most welcome. thanks
