my 2000 ford ranger 4x4 noise?

i have a 2000 ford ranger with a 4.0 soc and automatic locking 4x4. i went and pulled out a buddy and my 4x4 started making a noise like something is grinding in the front end. i only dose it in 2wd but in 4h and 4l it doesn't, but the 4x4 doesnt work. when in 2wd i can get out and turn the front drive shaft with my hand and something is grinding in the axle case. i hope someone can help me
