My 2000 Dodge Durango is running hotter then usual and has a weird odor when it

gets over a certain temp? Hello. I have a 2000 Dodge Durango and it has just recently started running hotter then usual. Not overheating yet but, I have a feeling it's on it's way. Plus, as it gets hotter, a weird smell comes from under the hood. It gets hot when I am sitting still or driving slowly on residential roads and not when I am going down the hwy at 70 or so. I realize I should take it to the shop and have it looked at but, I can't at this moment so I was wondering if maybe someone has had this problem before and It might be something I can check on and maybe replace myself. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and explored. I have a feeling if I don't look into it now, it will probably get worse. Thank you all in advance
 
Not too familiar with 00' durango's but i can give you some basic advice. If your car is overheating that means one thing, it isn't cooling itself like it is built to do (obviously). This can be from numerous things. Maybe the fan isn't kicking in, check the radiator, check the oil. Have the car running and look under the hood. How many miles are on the vehicle will also help to figure out the problem. Could be an electrical/computer issue when it is in idle. But all in all this is a definite problem, next thing you know you might have a rod poking through, or maybe a bad oil pump. Need more specs about your car for a better opinion.

First check to see if it is full of water/antifreeze. Then start it an watch it run until the temp guage says it is getting hot and see if the electronic fan kicks in. There is a sensor on the fan that lets the fan know when the motor is hot and when it should kick on. When you are going fast down the highway, the air flowing through the front end cools the engine so it will not get hot. If you have had work done to it recently and someone forgot to put your shroud on which is the plastic peice that goes around the fan that could also keep the air that the fan is blowing to cool the motor. But unless someone has worked on it recently and had to take it off, this should not be your problem. Good luck.
 
The plain and simple obvious answer is that the cooling fan is not coming on. Forget all this checking and testing and try a RADIATOR SHOP for a diagnosis. Much less than a $60+ an hour auto repair.
