My 1999 Ford Escort SE revs up and down when idling?

I have a 1999 Ford Escort SE that when in park or idling at a stop light starts to shimmy and shake. It shimmies and the cars shakes and then it will rev up to where it should maybe be and it's smooth for a few seconds with no shaking and then it goes back down and shimmies again.

I asked a few people what they thought it might be. One friend told me it may be the throttle position sensor. Another told me it may just be that the fuel injectors are a bit dirty and that I should try some inexpensive fuel injector cleaner.

It seems as though at times it's getting too much gas; you can put in reverse and it's zipping down the driveway.

I have the same problem in my 03 altima, and its the full throttle body, either there is too much carbon build up so when the door on the throttle body goes up and down it doesn't open up all the way because the carbon build up is preventing that, theres some carbon cleaner that you could get at auto zone or some place and spray it on there, and it should be fine, or you have a leak in one of the hoses. Basically whats going on is you vehicle is not getting a consistent amount of gas at one time, so it over compensates (when it revs up) and goes back to normal when it revs down. I would try checking out the carbon build up first and then, work your way up because thats the cheapest fix. hope this helps
