I have replaced my spark plugs, lead wires, had my throttle position sensor replaced, battery replaced, oil changed, fuel injectors cleaned, and the air filter changed. I have also had a full diagnostic ran and no error codes came up. So I know its none of that. What is happening: When stopped the car will rev to anywhere between 1500 - 2500 RPMS (when this happens the exhaust smells rich). It does this quite often. Also if stopped for a longer period of time it will chug when you hit the accelerator as if it wants to die out, but never dies. It is also idling at between 1200-1300 RMPS as opposed to it's normal 500 rpm idle.
I do not have a distributor cap, I have coil packs. I have been told it could be my fuel regulator or my over drive sensor. I have no idea and have invested quite a bit of money thus far and I am quite annoyed.
My exhaust smoke is not black. Its the same normal color it has always been.
The car has 253,000 some odd miles on it. Just fyi.
This was done after the diagnostic. the MECHANIC said to change the TPS and said that should finally fix it, but it did not.. The rest was pretty much general maintenance anyways and would have to be done at some point. The mechanic I go to is NTI certified but apparently with an issue like this and NO codes showing it is pretty much trial and error.
and the mechanic has done all the work. I have no idea what a "hunting idle" is, never heard of such a thing....but i have been reading on a toyota forum that a lot of ravs encounter this issue and most people replace the vacuum hoses...
Also found a thread with 7 different 98 RAV 4 owners experiencing the same issue, replacing the sames parts, all with mechanics that cannot figure out what is wrong, and EVEN going to toyota to have it checked and STILL no issue found....the threads I am finding offer no resolution, only shared frustration....
