My 1995 Honda accord lx automatic doesn't go into 2nd gear on it's own.?

It starts out in 1st gear. Then it doesn't change to 2nd gear unless you pull it down into 2nd with the shifter.I've heard that it's not good on the transmission to drive it like that. I really need to get this fixed because i have a baby due in January. what could be causing this and how much will it cost to repair it. What will happen if i keep pulling it down into second with the shifter?
