My 1994 Jeep cherokee 4.0 burns oil and A LOT of it?

That last couple of months I've only put 2200 miles on my jeep (75% city if that matters) and it went through 4 1/2 quarts of oil. This is the part that confuses me, it doesn't show any blue smoke and there's no spots of oil that I've seen on the ground. And about a month ago It just started to make a heat expansion noise from the engine when I turn off the jeep. I've also notice every since it started making that noise thats when it starting burning a lot of oil.

One other thing if this matters, there's a crack in the lower part of the manifold pipe (very common to happen in theses jeeps) were it turns into one pipe by the flange. I'm probably going replace the manifold soon but I want to figure out if this engine is going to need to be rebuilt or not before I put a new manifold on it.
There's no oil in the anti freeze ether.
