I would have to say the engine timing is off because it revs up to 3k then dies. if your car should have some kind of engine warmer, look on the dash for some sort of spiral light or something that likes up then goes away after a few seconds of the key being turned.

my 1988 mazda rx7 is hard to cold start in the morning. i start it and it runs to 3k and then it dies. once it gets warm tho it runs good. what could that be?

have you changed the spark plugs? rotary engines foul plugs if not run hard, it actually states it in owners manual, if it acts sluggish drive extremely hard for 10km = run up at redline, now 1979-85 rx7 have cold start assist it was a resivior of ethol gycal (green coolant) that was injected as a starting fluid in cold weather, check to see if your car has that system, the spark plugs must be ngk or bosch
