My 1981 Toyota tercel deluxe will no shift into first or third,?

it will go fine into second and fourth it is a manual tranny and the car has over 200,000 miles on it. I don't have a lot of money right now but am willing to try and fix it Please help No rude answers please I am a single mother of four little kids and need actual guidance.
I do not know where a shifter mechanism is or what it would even look like A friend of mine said she had it in first at a gas staion and didn't engage the clutch before trying to turn it over she said it lurched foreward and then wouldn't go into first she could drive it in second and fourth that is how she got it home I tried to put it into gera and 1 and 3 feel like something is blocking them from engaging?
 
Check for a worn shifter mechanism. In the absence of a worn shifter mechanism, you will need to take the vehicle to a transmission shop.
The shifter mechanism is located under the floor of the car and can only be seen by jacking up the car and watching the shifter while someone in the car shifts the gears.
