My mom seems to think that, because she walks around whining sometimes and cries a lot when she makes herself get on the sofa, she is old and should be put down. She can still do the flight of stairs three times a day to go to the backyard, but the other dogs get upset and check on her when she's whining. I was thinking of finding pain medicine for her, but we have little money, and my mom thinks euthanasia is the best plan. I need help with this... Should I be arguing, or is my wanting to avoid putting her down just denial?
For a 16 year old dog she moves well. She spends most of her time napping. We've had her on thyroid medicine for some time, and enjoyed when I took her to a dog park a bit over a month ago. She didn't play, but she walked around greeted the other dogs with tail wagging. She had to lay down frequently, but seemed so happy. My mom wants to euthanize because she saw how bad my grandparent's dog got because of my grandpa's inablility to cope with it. The dog couldn't see well, hear well, or even walk much. She was on medicine for grand maul seizures, three pain pills a day. She could barely do the two stairs outside the front door to the yard. She collapsed constantly, and if she walked past the staircase, her disorientation could cause her to stumble and fall down them to the basement. I think that's one reason my mom considers euthanizing her, but I'm not so sure. She's not that bad, she can do the back stairs a couple times a day.
