My '03 mustang gt makes whining noises when in gear?

My '03 mustang GT makes a loud whining sound while in gear. In neutral there is no noise. In 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear, it makes a whine and it gets a bit louder as I accelerate. Strangely in 4th gear, it doesnt whine at all but in 5th gear it does but not as loud as the first 3 gears. Anyone know exactly whats causing this and how I go about fixing it?
When I get on it and let off the accelerator, it doesnt whine. At least not until it gets down to about 1k rpm.
