my 03 chevy mailbu; after a fillup gas gage went form F to E after I put back

the gascap!? 2003 Chevrolet Malibu, after I filled the gas tank and closed it , the gage went to F like normal, then a split second later went to E and the lowgas warning light came on. I shutoff the car and restarted it, I also took off the cap and made sure it was clean, I even turned the inside part of the cap to make sure nothing was hanging up. Not sure what to do,aside from a costly visit to te shop.
the car was just serviced after sitting in a driveway unused in Florida for 1.5 yrs (after a family member passed back then). Im wondering if I need to remove the battery cables and let the car "power down" then reattach them a day later?
 
dang, you must have gone to a station that has had the pump rebuilt lately and when it was re-installed they got the wiring backwards and now it sucks gas from your tank instead of pumping gas into it. go complain to the owner ot the station!
 
It might be the sender unit in the trunk got compromised due to moisture during the period of non-use. If the gas tank was low, it is possible that the parts of the sender unit were not protected from the elements by the gas. May sound unlikely, but worth a shot. If you have access to back probe the gauge, you may be able to see if you are getting the correct signal from the tank.
 
The sending unit is part of the fuel pump assembly, that's the most likely cause, figure about 750 dollars parts and labor for a delco unit to be installed at a reputable shop.
 
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........hard to say.it could be that the gauge has done went bad and the whole gauge cluster might need to be replaced.but its hard to say what,could be a short in a wire,the gas cap not sealing the gas tank properly.u can try dissconnecting the battery and let the comp reset,but u wouldnt have to wait a day for it to do so.just disconnect for about an hour.hoped this helped.
