So I bought my Elantra used, unfortunately the check light turned on within days after buying it (I wasn't too upset, I got a good deal)

The manual says the Malfunction "Check" light is a sophisticated computer that checks many aspects of the cars parts.

So I took it into the mechanics to ask what it is, and his computer code said it had to do with emissions. He told me not to stress it; it won't cause me any problems.

Ever since I had bought the car (and had the light on) I noticed I have lost 4-8 mpg per tank. It might not be related, but I think it is.

Is anyone else familiar with this problem? Thanks!

This is the third 01-02 Hyundai question I've answered today. The other two had problems filling their tank. What a coincidence.

While most codes won't affect your fuel economy, there are a couple that will. Take it back and see if you have thrown another fault code on top of the first one. If your engine detects certain faults it will run based on a set program and ignore some of the sensors. This typically gives you worse fuel economy.
