Yesterday a Muslim quoted this Ayat in reply to my question:
52:21 And those who believe and whose families follow them in Faith,-
to them shall We join their families: Nor shall We deprive them (of the fruit)
of aught of their works: (Yet) is each individual in pledge for his deeds.
I recalled similar Ayat also exists in Chapter Muddathir, lending credence to
the possibility that it is a basic belief of Islam:
38 "Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds "
The fact that each one of us is pledged and confined in hell, until he produces
good deeds to bail him out, sends a shiver in my spine!
Do you think I have understood its meaning correctly ?
