"And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers." ( Quran 3--85 )

This verse is worrying me so much , those who stick to their belief thinking that they are right , they reject Islam because that what they think , they may got it wrong or whatever but that all what they could think of .. you can not force someone to believe in something you really think is right ..no matter what you do ..we can never expect everyone to convert to Islam.
I pray I can find good explanation .
Baghdad, I'm directing this question to Muslims , Are you Muslim ?!!!!!!!!
Servant of Allah ,I wouldn't have posted this question before reading its interpretation , the verse is quite clear , its interpretation " tafsir " is the same way I understand it .
faith, No compulsion in religion is the same one like it's up to you to believe in God or not , if you choose not to then you're condemned, same this verse is , it's up to you not to embrace Islam but if you didn't you're condemned , so there is absolutely NO contradiction , I understand this goes under the will of the person but still what if they got it wrong ? I'm counting on God' understanding and mercy .

Whos to say that Muslims have got it right. No religion is the right one and you should never force others to believe what you believe..

By what I have seen while living in Middle Eastern countries, your faith is very much NOT a positive religion at all. Its very one sided and very full of its self. People are getting smart to this and you folks can't push that little oh poor us thing around anymore.

you are right
every one is sure of his own belief but you should be stimulated to know more about religions.
we are not allowed to allure anyone.
you said that you are free to choose any belief you like and nobody can stop you.
and we said yes..there is no compulsion in religion.
use your will to know more..that's why god gives you a brain.
am a Muslim and am reading bible just to know more even am sure of my belief 100%
try to read kor'an and you will find peace and rational logic.
if you find any contradictions i will be ready to discuss it with you
peace to you

Just the usual threats from that book. Amazingly these work for most people, by binding them ever more to Islam. It serves it's purpose to hold them in, even though it's a false religion.

All others are losers...LOL.

See first of all..................you should consult a scholar. Verses don't have to be discussed.. their tafsir is already been written by scholars who are well versed in the subject.

By you posting a verse as a question and then asking for discussion you are asking people to comment on the quran which are the words of Allah.

When you need to understand quantum physics you dont go to GCSE student of physics? but you will ask a person who is well versed on this subject.

what does the verse say about compulsion? there's no compultion..
it's simple,Allah states that there is no religion accepted with Him from any person, except Islam. Islam includes obeying all of the Messengers until Muhammad who finalized their commission, thus closing all paths to Allah except through Muhammad . Therefore, after Allah sent Muhammad , whoever meets Allah following a path other than Muhammad's, it will not be accepted of him.

whoever choose(by his own will) to follow another path,it's up to him,but he'll have to answer to Allah in the hereafter.

yes we don't expect everyone to convert, but there are ppl who did,who was like u said really believed in their former religioun, until they started to think and to search about islam, and they may get it wrong, but now it's easy to learn about islam the right way

Allah or God what ever you choose to call, is the creator of heavens and earth and every thing in between the two. Allah created we all humans and chose for all humans Islam to be the only right religion. Islam is right because it gives us correct directions that lead to Allah and His heaven and to live a life of piety in this life. How can rejecting Islam and following some man made religion be the right religion if as Allah says, it is not acceptable to Him? . This simply means that your belief is wrong and man made.

Allah says in Quran in Surah 112. that He is one and only Allah, He is not born to any one and no one is born from Him. But if you think Jesus is son of God , or god
himself, doesnlt make it right. Do you know better than Allah, the creator of all universe?

Allah is guiding you to correct your thought process and telling you what is right. Allah is not forcing you, but guiding you to correct your rout. If you think the rout you are driving on will take you to heaven but in reality it falls down from a cliff to a 300' deep ditch whose fault it will be to continue driving on this road even after Allah's warning to you?

Shereen - God is Merciful and shows mercy when a person has lived all his/her life in darkness and on wrong path, understands at the end that Islam is the right religion and accepts Allah the only God then Allah forgives that person out of His mercy if he accepts Islam whole heartedly and follows all teachings of Islam, puts his/her life on right track that leads to heaven, then yes he/she becomes worthy to enter in Heaven.

Allah's Mercy is there for you. But you can't continue following wrong path and accept Mercy also. You can't continue driving on the wrong road even after Allah warns you and also expect Allah to save you when the road ends you and your car are going down in the deep ditch where hell is. Which means when your life ends, you are dead it is all over for you. Then it will be the time for punishment for following the wrong religion or reward for following the right religion.

Allah sent Prophets and Messengers to guide mankind to follow the right course of life before they die. There is Mercy for those who accept the right religion, makes mistakes and repent also. But those who reject Allah, continue on wrong route even after warnings and die in darkness. Then time of Mercy ends and such people find themselves in hell. They don't even get to see God almighty. Angels take them straight to hell. You have seen the light of Allah. You have understood the statement of Allah in this Ayah clearly as you confirm and still wants to continue wrong religion, then no one can help you. Job of Allah and we Muslims for your guidance is over. Neither Allah is forcing you nor myself.
We leave you alone after you have understood.

Now My dear, it is upto you, what you want to do.

if someone truly understands and studies Islam with an open mind and heart... He/she will accept it.. i am not just saying this cause Im muslim... Ive seen too many converts that you'd think theyd never accept it... Like catholic priests.. athiests.. those that only started to study it to pick it apart and find the bad in it.. only to find it was the truth and accepted it..
Its a complex total guide to living on this earth, worship.. how to deal with everyday situations.. science, arts, maths.. everything is there laid out for you... ...
just that in this modern day.. there are some who interpret it wrongly and give a bad idea of it... but those that are of open mind and willing to seek knowledge will accept it... and remain with it... so back to your question... if someone of another faith is truly introduced to the proper ideals of Islam he will welcome it in his heart whole heartedly...

You have to go back to verse 81 which says:

3:81 And when Allah made a covenant through the prophets: Certainly what I have given you of Book and wisdom-- then an messenger comes to you verifying that which is with you, you must believe in him, and you must aid him. He said: Do you affirm and accept My compact in this (matter)? They said: We do affirm. He said: Then bear witness, and I (too) am of the bearers of witness with you.

3:82 Whoever therefore turns back after this, these it is that are the transgressors.

3:83 Is it then other than Allah's religion that they seek (to follow), and to Him submits whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him shall they be returned.

3:84 Say: We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoub and the tribes, and what was given to Musa and Isa and to the prophets from their Lord; we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit.

and then comes the verse you mention. So Abraham was Muslim. Christians and Jews are safe if their deeds out weigh their evil deeds. but we need volumes to explain this in detail, i will give one example: When a muslim does a good deed allah gives him 10 points when a christian does a good deed allah gives him one point.

As Salaam to you all,

Firstly we do not discuss indepth that which has been given to us and which has been clarified by the scholars so that all people can understand. But that does not say that we cannot discuss what the scholras say and any difference between the schools of thought.

However, this is not the case if I read the questioner right, for here the questioner is worried about something which is totally out of their control. An individual will decide what path to follow irrespective of what you may say or do. People are guided towards Islam by none other than Allah (SWT) and not man. We are but His instruments of teaching what He wants and the way He wants us to be.

As Muslims we can only tickle the surface of the individual, for them to read and ask more questions and it is up to us to answer such questions.

When I reverted to Islam back in 1989 I wanted to kill all Muslims for leaving me in the dark for so long but after a short time I realised it was not their fault but mine and the Will of Allah (SWT). Islam will come when He is ready and He feels that the person is ready. If anything hurts more today is to see the Ummah of Islam destroying itself due to the secular differences we have established in His name.

You cannot have the weight of every single individual upon your frail shoulders and He knows this. Do what you can to sow the seed of thought within the mind of all people as to what is right within Islam and do not be afraid to say what is wrong with Islam as well. For in reality there is nothing wrong within Islam, only those who interpret it wrongly and try to force others to follow their path to destruction.

Wa Salaam
