Muslims: How do you know where in the Quran you should translate the verses

metaphorically or literally? Please don't tell me that Allah will guide us. I want a good detailed answer.
*I think a better word would be interpret not translate. I did not mean translating it from Arabic to English but reading the Quran in Arabic and knowing how to intepret it.
