Muslims, does the quran or sharia law say to punish a muslim who leaves the faith?

Regarding "being born into Islam", there is no question. Muslim children are never given a choice. This concept is totally lost on Muslims. They believe its their right to program children as soon as they are able to speak. The idea of "brainwashing" or "freedom to chose" is absolutely foreign to them, in the sense your asking, and impossible to explain.
 
There is a big debate in this regard. Personally, I have yet to find the correct answer myself.

I once asked a similar question in the Ramadan section, and some people there opined that the laws are just meant for a specific group of people for a specific time, not for the modern periods.

Muslim Scholars themselves are divided on this issue.
 
I think (I could be way off on this one) that they are suppose to kill and eat them.
