Musical instrument lessons in UK school are a complete JOKE! Do you agree?

The way it works in secondary schools (and primary) is that the student misses a standard lesson so that he can attend the music lesson. They try to vary each week which lesson is missed but this is not always the case. It is up to the student to find out what he has missed by not attending his GCSE classes - even when leading up to exams! What a STUPID system! This can only happen in the UK! And to top it all students have to pay for the lessons. So its really not considered important at all in the UK. Music teaching in the UK is dead. Do you feel the same way?
you all seem to miss the point. Music is not more important than maths or enlish! Its nothing about being lazy either. What kind of education system works on a basis of subjects clashing every week? Its pathetic.
Who says the UK education system is "world class"? Only the English! It is true we have a long tradition of good private school education and as a result a lot of people come over from abroad to educate their children in these PRIVATE schools. But the same is NOT true of the State Sector. Why do the English have such a superior attitude to everything. I just wish they would admit for once that they are not the best in the world?! In fact a number of 3rd world countries have a better education system than the UK. I would be interested to see an UNBIASED report into the state of UK education compared with the rest of the world.
 
I disagree. I had piano and clarinet and choir during my gcse and alevels, i was given a timetable and had to catch up work, its not a big deal if your not lazy.

you should only be playing an instrument if oyu take it seriously, in which case it should be worth missing an english or maths lesson for, and to be honest you dont miss much in one lesson.

only difference is the school paid for my lessons so i didnt pay anything.

but the point stands - its about commitment and whether the student can be bothered to keep up. I spent hours in the library revising anyway, i would have whether or not i had music lessons, and it paid off.

ITs about attitude, the UK school system is world class, you should be greatful your not in a wood hut learning the alphabet at 18.
 
No, I loved having music lessons at school. It doesn't make any sort of a difference that you miss half an hour of one lesson in a week (which it usually is in most schools)-how useless must you be if you can't be bothered to find out what you missed in half an hour?

I think you're likely to find it's the same in any country. What else are they meant to do? There's not enough time after school to offer enough people music lessons, so that would be pointless. Having them during the school day allows the most people to get lessons.

And just because you have to pay doesn't mean it's not important, but it is an extra. It's also usually subsidised though, and you would find yourself paying much more if you had lessons privately.
 
You cant say that for all schools. Im primary school I took violin lessons for one lunch time every week.

In secondary school it was an hour after school once a week.
