Music Question Or Tx

Hello, As I said I am a newbie both here and with my TX. I have tried to find my answers here in this site as well as elsewhere, but to no avail.

My question(s) is this...can my TX be used as an adequet music player (able to store, say several hundred songs at a time)?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of storing them on the TX vs memory cards?

What are the recommended sites/services for downloads ( ie price, quality, formats, etc)?

Are there any tutorials out there for these sort of questions and others on the subject so I do not have to bother forum users over and over?

Please point in the right direction :D

1. can my TX be used as an adequet music player (able to store, say several hundred songs at a time)?

If you use a large SD card. I don't know how many songs you can fit onto a 1 or 2GB card. The number of songs depends on the capacity of your SD card.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of storing them on the TX vs memory cards?

Advantages: If you ever do a hard reset, you will still have your files if they are stored on memory cards. Also, memory cards are able to store more files than your internal memory. Another point is that if you use up your internal memory, your device will start decreasing in performance. The memory will become fragmented and cause the device to slow down.

Disadvantages to using a memory card: 1. Battery life may be shortened. 2. You have to swap cards whenever you want to listen to music. 3. Data stored on your SD card has to be manually backed up onto your desktop computer. Hotsync mainly backs up your internal memory.

3. What are the recommended sites/services for downloads ( ie price, quality, formats, etc)?

I don't have any sites to suggest. However, MP3 seems to be the most universal file format for music and has the best support. Unfortunately, Palm OS requires MP3 files to be stored on a memory card and not in the internal memory.

Many users use software utilities to convert audio cds to MP3 files. Personally, I try avoid downloading audio files from the internet because some of these music sharing sites install spyware on desktop computers.

Palm's web site has a support database. However, speaking from experience, the forums do a better job of providing information you need in a timely manner. If you want to get information on a wider range of topics, I would recommend visiting several forums. You can also perform a search in the forums before asking questions in a new thread. Some topics have been previously discussed.

Ok I see basically this...
Yes it will work. Use a LARGE card for storage. Burn cd's,(use window media 10 format) or get mp3's , then transfer them into the pocket tunes format and then use Pocket Tunes to play on the TX.
Is this it in a nut shell???

Other than standing by my computer and rippping the hundreds of cd's I have, what are some of the preferred sites for downloading songs (free or decently priced) that I will not have to worry about device compatibility issues or only being able to tranfer once or twice?

This is starting to sound more hassle than its worth. All I want is to down load some songs from time to time and listen to them on the TX for a couple of hours at a time. Is this possible or not ? ! ?

The simplest thing is to burn music from your CDs rather than bothering with downloading. It really doesn't take that much time. If you are using pTunes, you can burn to either mp3 or wma. Ptunes will play both (Deluxe version). Once burned you simply need to move the files to the folder on your SD card where pTunes will find them. No need to convert to pTunes "format". If you want, you can even burn directly from the CD to your SD card. Try it. It really isn't a hassle. I carry about 2 1/2 gb of music around with me on 2 1gb cards and a 512 mb card. I love having music that I like with me all the time and the Palm (w/pTunes) does make a decent and functional music player.

Yes, burning cd's may not be a hassle if you are just updating your music collection one at a time. But, as I said I am just beginning, so that means about 200 cd's to burn. As to current music, unfortunately now days the cd's they put out now are usually crapp. By that I mean they contain one or two good songs with the rest just "B-side" filler. For that reason I just assume to download what I actually want.
So I am still looking to see what sites people are using. :D
