Music producing?

ok, I want to become a music producer for my career, sort of. I don't really want to run the whole show, like Dr. Dre or Scott Storch. I just want to play a small part in it, like doing the keyboards, or bass, or mixing. Anyone know where a good place to start to do all of this? Do I need schooling or can I just pick up a music keyboard from a local retailer and practice and practice and practice until I get the hang of it and then move on to a bigger thing? Please, I need help with this, this is something I really really want to do.
 
With playing an instrument it's always highly advised to get taught how to play it. However, if you experience financial issues or simply don't want to be taught by a paid teacher, you'll have to "practice, practice, practice" more than you would if you did have a teacher. To answer your second question, yes, you could probably just go out, buy an instrument, practice till your fingers fell off (not literally), and become (somewhat) experienced. As to become a Music Producer, I would suggest that you either 1) Read loads of information on it. And/or 2) Talk to someone who IS a Music producer.

(Side Note:) Reading up on the instrument you play is also a very very good thing to do. So don't just play the instrument, know the instrument.
