Music debate............................................ ?

What I see most in the music section is the argument that

1. New music sucks and old bands are better (referring to the 60s and 70s not much before then and only rock).

2. Either Nirvana is overrated, Metallica sucks, or U2 blows.

3. The only good bands are undiscovered because they haven't sold out.

4. Old people are being crotchety because they wish they were still young and are living in the past.

As for undiscovered musicians any musician is undiscovered, to you, if you haven't heard of them. Letting populairty determine your listening tastes is dangerous. I doubt many young people know who Fats Waller is, or Duke Ellington, Gershwin, or Carla Thomas etc. they haven't discovered them yet.

As for old music, it ain't old if it's new to you. Just because the date of production is before you were a zygote doesn't make it bad. I discovered most of the music I love shortly after high school and most of it came out before I was born.

So my question is do you think knowing this country's musical roots is important to being a "true" music fan? Or maybe I should say sophisticated music fan, or (gasp) an elitist?

Is it important to being a good musician?

Why or why not?

I say, "Hell Yes" but in society it feels more like most folks especially the younger generations, even mine, would say "Meh-"

f**k man, i dont care. as long as it gets me movin and singin its all good in my book!

People will think that you've got a real point here because you've written a million words in your question, but in essence this is just another question from another person who thinks they've figured out the entire psychological root of society. This is nothing new, dude, it's not gonna spark a debate, and you haven't made some amazing discovery about the music tastes of the American people.

Yeah you pretty much hit it on the head. Man, I don't even care anymore. People take music far too seriously. I've seen religious people get more offended when someone tells them "The Beatles are boring" than "God isn't real". Look, if you like it, then listen to it. If you don't, then don't. And quit sticking your nose in other peoples' business.

Well not YOU you, but in general you. Lol.
