Muncie transmission in a mid-90's-1998 Chevy Silverado?

I'm wondering if this is possible. All of my experiences with this kind of truck have involved an eventual transmission failure, so knowing I can upgrade would be great.

If I can't drop in a Muncie, is it possible to upgrade to another transmission?
 
I have a 97 that had the 4l60e in it. It was shot at around 60K miles. The local tranny shop knew of a few ways to improve it. It now has 140K on it with no problems. TCI and a few others make a version of the 4l60e that is supposed to be built to handle more abuse than the stock version. I don't think they are to unreasonable either. Try Jegs or Summit maybe?
 
a muncie, though a great tranny has no overdrive... this will be difficult for freeway driving depending on your gearing and tire size.. 1994 and above carry 4l60e transmissions, which is basically a 700r4 electronically controlled... if its the 4l60 your trucks computer will have to be tuned to not accept input from the transmission sensors and run a different harness to the motor... i would check out th 4l80e which is a much stronger transmission.. manual conversions are always difficult and on chevy trucks very time consuming.. on an older truck it would be no biggie... try looking at newer 5 speeds because some chevys did come with factory 5 speeds.. if that is the case you could get all the parts to do the swap from a dealer and do it in a weekend since all the 5 speed holes and such are still on your truck.. but you may have to cut them outor do some rearranging to get to them...
 
The old "Rock Crusher" wouldn't have overdrive so your mileage would suffer. But it is possible to change over to a manual if you like. Expensive but possible.
