I have a dilemma. I want to ride a road bike. I'm 21. I'm not a revhead. I would consider myself a very sensible driver. I never take chances, never speed and don't drink.

My mum doesn't want me to get a road bike. She doesn't want to me to learn to ride one either.

I have been in an accident previously. Last year, a 45yo woman sped through a set of red traffic lights (from the opposite direction) when I had a set of green lights and she collected me. She wrote off my '97 bmw 318is. When she got out of her vehicle, all I remember her saying was that "My kids are at dreamworld, my kids are at dreamworld... I have to get to dreamworld." It was 6:05pm at night, and I was on my way home from work to see my girlfriend at the time. Mum refers to this event as an argument for not getting a bike.

I would like to convince her that it is safe to ride. What are some statistics or something that explain the fatalities on a motorbike? Am I kidding myself into thinking they are safe if you drive properly?

What do you think I should do? Is my mum right? Are they too dangerous? It would be a lot more convenient for me to ride a bike for free parking at work. But I don't want it just for the convenience. I want it for the appeal and the (life) experience.
I'm not really after - it's your decision type answers. I mean, I want to, and I will get one if i want one. I suppose I'd just like to know that they can be safe to ride, for my mum.

You're 21 mate, it's your decision, your choice to take the risk to ride one.

They do have a high appeal. How can you resist. ;)
