Much bleeding after brushing teeth?

Recently I've started spitting a lot of blood when I brush my teeth. I've always spat a little bit of blood after brushing teeth, but now all of a sudden I'm spitting a lot lot more. Almost as if I have a large cut in my mouth and I'm spitting blood from it.

The backstory is that I've started using a new mouthwash. I had braces for 2 years. They were removed 7 years ago, but I wear a retainer once a week (supposed to be once every two nights, but it's all bent out of shape and barely fits on the teeth anyway so I wonder as to its effectiveness anyway).I also have a cement and wire retainer permanently attached to the back of my front 6 teeth top and bottom. My dentist one day decided that I didn't need it any more and made a hatchet job of taking it out leaving me with stray wires sticking out of the cement. It causes some irritation when the wires stick out and catch my tongue.

Recently it has been causing a lot off irritation to my tongue, causing one side that rubs off the retainer often to swell up to the size of a grape. I've since gotten orthodontic wax which eases the irritation. I'm considering that the 2 things are connected. Either that my mouth has been infected due to the injury caused by my retainer to my tongue, or else that my mouth is infected and that's what causing the retainer to irritate me now more than ever.

Any advice would be great. I'm planning to see a dentist once my exams are finished the week after next, but until then I'd like a remedy. One tooth is sore to brush because the gum underneath is quite tender, but the bleeding seems to appear on the other side of the mouth.
