Part one: Three free common video converter mac(from cnet)

1: HandBrake(the most popular freeware)
Pros: Free to use, simple, getting home movies on to your iPod, mainly designed for DVD user, sometimes can convert AVCHD Lite format to MP4 and MKV(but just tested on OSX )

Cons: only few output and input there's a 7-day limitation, it takes a long time if you use the wrong settings. Takes a very long time to encrypt, Slows down your computer during process etc.

2: Avidemux is a free open-source program that can be used to demux and remux the audio and video streams into several different container formats including AVI, MP4, and MKV.
Pros: good at cutting, pull out clips of larger videos, navigation of the source movie file is fairly straightforward, says can convert AVCHD files.

Cons: Just for Mac OS X 10.5 PPC/Intel or windows, difficult to figure out what the settings do, can't paste 2 videos together, slow, sometimes no sound, no instructions, limited ability to improve vids, .

3:Mobile Media Converter: free, just for windows(not windows7).
