I'm new to this message board. I recently received my MRI results(yesterday) and was told that I have 3 bulging discs, nerve damage and 2 tears in discs. I was also told that I have mild arthritis, which is not a concern of mine right now. I wanted to know if there is anyone out there that can shed some light on this for me. I don't know what to expect as of now. I am in a lot of pain and my legs are often weak and very shaky when walking down the stairs. They also tend to fall asleep and feel nurab when I'm laying in bed. I can't do anything without being in pain. For instance, when walking through the grocery store, I start to get bad pain in my back, especially between my shoulder blades and pain in my lower back that radiates into my buttocks and down the back of my legs. My hips also hurt. I'm scared to death right now because I don't want to have surgery. I've had 4 surgeries in the past(gynocological) and it took a long time for me to heal. I can't imagine what it would be like to recover from back surgery. I was told by my general pract. that he would make an appointment for me to see a surgeon, so I'm guessing that this could be a serious situation. I appreciate any input and advice as to what the heck I have lying ahead.

just exactly where are the bad discs and nerve damage located?what did they state specifically about the 'nerve damage"?its usually not mentioned that particular way in an MRI,thats why i am asking.if you do not actually have your own copy of your MRI you really need to obtain one soon and go thru it for yourself.if you can just post that very last summary part at the end of your MRI here,we can try and help you to make some sense out of it for you.its just that in most cases, what you are actually told was found in any given MRI report isn't always exactly the way it is.and you are not always even told about certain real findings in it either.trust me,it does happen alot to many people.you just really need to keep your own copies of any and all testing results that ever get done on you.just let us know exactly what the radiology report states for certain, that will help alot in being able to really give you the best possible advice.Marcia

feelbad,
I haven't seen the MRI myself. My GP called me last Thursday to tell me. He said that I have to go see a surgeon. I will get more info then.

you can call the place that done your MRI and ask for a copy of the report. that way you will know exactly what it says...and you can prepare yourself for any questions that you might will have when you see the dr for a follow up....it takes no time at all to get the report...you can call on monday...and should be able to go that day for a copy...but some places might ask for a 24 hour notice before you can pick it up...but just wanted to let you know that you can get a complete copy of the MRI report for yourself.

and just as feelbad stated...you may not have been given all of the details....i dont know why they do that....but its a reality! for instance...i was told that i had a ruptured disc at L-5 with nerve displacement............months later when i obtained my own copy of the report...i found that i also have mild arthritis as well as 2 other mildly bulging discs..which to this day...i have yet to hear a dr mention anything about them!! (very long story...so wont bog you with details....I just wanted to let you know that what you have been told may not be all that there is in your report)

you can also just ask your primary to make you a copy when you see him agian.my primary will get copies of anything in my file if i just ask and its right there and availiable.if you are actually going over that report,it should be a pretty simple request.there are just a few different ways of obtaining copies of anything in your medical file or a particular test result.if you ask,it shouldn't be a problem.you do have that right to anything in your file.marcia

I am so sorry you are having so much pain, I know how much back can hurt.
Arthrities is a detony for all the people who is over 25 - people start to get changes in their spines as young as 25: DDD, arthirites, stenosis, etc.
Bulging and tears can heal by itself. People get them during their lives many-many times and they usually heal, takes some time though. My husband has bulges on and off for the past 25 years -due his job he has to pick up heavy suitcases every day so he can't give his back a rest to heal.
Tears same thing. I had car accident in 2003 and MRI showed tears and bulges (this was very mild diagnoses to compare to other major damages). I had surgery 6 month later and it showed that i didn't have tears and bulges anymore. I was in so much pain after accident and was very careful, went to PT and it healed by itself.
But what concerns me is that you got nerved involved - this can be serious if not treated. That is why you get the symptoms you describe.

I wish you all the best and hope they will find all answers for you to be able to help.

Could the nerve damage cause problems with my arms also? My arms and hanRAB go nurab and ache all the time. I can't even use tweezers to pluck my eyebrows without having to take a break after just a few minutes.
