I just got an MRI done on the 14th, results are Disc L5 and S1 , have a herniated disc of 11mm on the posterior vertebrae, geussing next step is to see specialist and start with injections to see if that will take down the swelling? Do you think injections will work? If not what would you think the next step would be? and how long of a recovery if any would you guess it will take? Thank for you responsive help. Michael

the disc is actually herniated, 11mm, posterior....pressing on the nerve causing foot and partial leg nurabness....muscle for dorsal flexion is not there, can not flex foot upwarRAB, no power whatsoever....hoping injections may give some relief....seeing the specialist on friday the 22nd.....see what his recommendations are....? can view my MRI by clicking on my name to the upper lefthand side and view public pictures........thanks once again for all of your help.....Michael

Hi again, Mike. Are you going to see an Orthopedic spine specialist or a neurosurgeon that specializes in the spine or have you done so already. If not, that should be your next step.

Injections can take down some of the swelling, but it does sound like you have some serious nerve impingement going on, and in the long run, the injections are just a band-aid and waiting could cause permanent damage. I would have a serious talk with the surgeon and see what he thinks is best. If he thinks you should have surgery, then get a second opinion before doing it.

You will be seeing your specialist the day after I have my fusion so I won't be around to find out the results. That is, IF I even get to have the surgery. Routine pre-op testing showed high liver enzymes, around 155 so I had to have an endoscope and thankfully, everything looked okay. Yesterday I had more blood work to see if the enzyme level has come down. If not, or if they rise, I can't have the surgery most likely as the anesthesiologists don't want to put people out if you have having liver problems. I am waiting now for the call to let me know and am praying that they have come down. If not, the next step is a liver biopsy and boy, oh boy, I don't want to have to go throughy that!! No anethesia at all, just that long needle going in there and grabbing a bite of the liver. YUCKIES.

I do hope that whatever your next step is, it will have a good outcome for you.

Carol

I hope all works out for you, it is a spine specialist, not the neurosurgeon yet.......will see what they have to say........good luck with your surgery and talk with you soon.......

Mike,

I would strongly suggest that you take it one step at a time and not just rush into injections, without finding out as best you can, what the problem(S) are. Injections need to be well thought out, in my opinion, and used as a tool to diagnose, along with try to take away your pain. And, from what you said about your foot weakness and the nurabness you are having, you should be asking about getting a Nerve study, to help you further in yoru diagnosing what is wrong. I have been dealing with many issues since at least 2007, but even further back than that......it is in my info on my profile. If you try to skip steps, you will go through what I did, where I completely lost my way and had to start ALL over again. Which turns out was by far the best thing I could have done. Set up a plan of action that makes sense to you. You are younger, but you seem to have to do heavy lifting and other physical stuff. Be patient and think things through and be your own doctor too, and don't just get one opinion. Learn what this is about and ask other people questions and then make sure that things being done or suggested make sense to you, and that the doctor(s) explain what they are doing and why they want to do it. Meaning, what is THEIR plan too,

I've been through the good and the bad, and am now going for major surgery.....simply because I can see from the MRIs and the X-rays that have changed drastically, that there is no escaping my issues. But with you, it seems to have been a one shot deal where you injured it. Much different. But the fact that you have severe weakness in your foot/ankle action, I believe is not a good thing, from what my doctor that I trust big time now, has been looking to see if it developed like yours has. But I have only a a tiny bit of weakness. Mine is all a slow degenerative problem.

I hope things work out for you. Good luck and again, be your own doctor also. It will help the process and offer you the best chances, IMO.
