...What phrase or sentence would descibe this quintessential actor? Why? Thank you
I was fortunate to have seen his performance in "Amadeus" three times at the NT and also saw him in "Valpone." I was a poor student but in the good old days, standby rush seats were only 50 pence. Thus, I could afford to see this giant-one of the greatest actors ever! What a magnificent experience to see Mr. Paul Scofield perform with grace, dignity and elegance. We have lost a GREAT actor, the last of the real actors!

Mr. Paul Scofield rejected knighthood and said:
“I have every respect” for people who are offered a knighthood, he said. “It’s just not an aspect of life I would want. If you want a title, what’s wrong with Mr?”

"He was not simply the greatest actor, but among the greatest artists of the last century...He was walking proof, too, that genius requires neither publicity nor arrogance. He was humble, courteous,...possessed of the greatest acting talent talent yet seen or heard. He was the best."~ a quote from Jonathan, London on BBC World Service
