Moving across the country with motorcylce

Has anyone ever crated up a motorcycle and put it inside a Uhaul with the rest of the furniture when moving?

I am moving back to Los Angeles in the summer and I wonder how I will take my bike.

Any suggestions?

Ive done this a couple of times, my first suggestion is remove the tank and fairings, along with headlights, and fairing stay wrap it up and box it, second depending on how large the truck or trailer is there may or may not be hooks to tie down your bike. If they dont have tie downs put a few old car tires down, loop them together with duct tape, drop a soft old blanket on top and lay your bike down. Lay a ton of blankets and soft spongy stuff on top. Or call a moving service there are alot of truck companies that will deliver your bike insured for anywhere from 250 to 1000 depending on distance

I haven't moved across the country but I did pick my bike up in a U-haul from the frieght in Fairbanks. It came in this box all the way from L.A., on a boat.

Coolest thing I have ever seen

This place sells these pop-up crates, they are like $500, but well worth it and reusable

My bike is below:

Any reason on removing the tank?

I was thinking about just crating it up and putting it in the uHaul.

Shipping is an option, but I don't want to spend the extra $$ if I can just take it with me, ya know?

Maybe I'll rent a trailer and hinge that on?

I was more curious if anyone has ever put a motorcycle INSIDE of a moving truck.. :P

I rented a 14' U-haul truck with a loading ramp. It fit perfect, not much room for any large furniture though.

I had the crate forklifted into the back of the truck. When I got home, me and a buddy broke the crate down in the truck and I rolled the bike down into my garage. PERFECT!

MY BIKE WAS IN PERFECT, UNTOUCHED CONDITION

Good god that's expensive for a freaking crate. Some wood and metal...heh!

Hmmm...something a little more economical maybe?

the reason is scratches, but I rented a large truck once and they didnt have a place to hook your tie downs. on the floor or on the sides. Most of the trucks have some sort of place to attach your tie downs. but if they dont this method works well or build a floor like what brooks posted. Good luck with the move

Hell yeah it is!

But it was part of the pricing to ship my bike here to Alaska, $1900. Living outside of the U.S. blows

I'll definitely use it again when I move back to Cali next year. That crate held up really well

I've moved to an from alaska 2 times now with bikes. If I am hauling a single bike I have rented the second smallest trailer and just towed it with my car. You can easily fit one bike, it's enclosed, and has tie downs. No problem. I did once transport 2 bikes along with all my furniture in a big ass uhaul. I loaded all the furniture toward the front and had my couch kind of sectioning off the last part of the uhaul. I ratchet tied down the couch like a bitch so nothing would slide back and also made a "web" above the couch in case any small items fell back. I then had both bikes side by side. I used tie downs for both bikes to the walls of the uhaul and none to the floor. I tied to the frames, wheels, handlebars, and every place I could. A frigging mess of ties, but they weren't moving anywhere. I also put some chocks under the wheels to prevent any rolling. I was sure to pop the door and check them every few hundred miles. Never had a problem in >2,500 miles one way. And that is on frigging bumpy ass frost heaven roads through the yukon territory.

brooks,

are there even any dealers up there who can work on the Aprilia? We have a ducati/BMW dealer in anchorage, but I was hesitant to go for the MV or Aprilia up here since I have a hard time finding people who know Ducati's well (even though they sell them). I figure the s1000 might be better for me, otherwise I might go for the F4.

nice bike BTW, sucks being here with a new bike like that and looking outside realizing the snow will still be around for a while.

I need to move...anyone want to house swap????lol
