Movie only playing Audio in Windows Media Player. Why?

I downloaded movies and right after the download completes, I test it to see if it works. All of my movies are in AVI format, and all of them worked on Windows Media Player. But now when I tried to watch them, all i get is the audio of the movie. I don't know why, being that I previously watched it and now all of a sudden it doesn't work? Could it be that i set my iTunes as the default player for everything so it changed the WMP settings? idk
Please Help!
What are Codecs? And are there particular ones i should download?
