Mountain biking vs. Road cycling. Which is more expensive?

I've been an avid road cyclist and just now starting to get into mountain biking. While like 5-10 years ago the most premium priced (over 2K dollars) are reserved for road bikes, nowadays it's all too easy to find mountain bikes priced at this range. While there are still road bikes that is priced to the sky, there are more specialized mountain bikes such as DH, XC, freeride, etc and one could end up spending more by buying more bikes to cover more areas of mtn. biking.

So, what's your take? Which discipline costs more to dedicate to?
